Acceptable strengths & weaknesses in job interviews
Two common job interview questions that you will often have to answer are in regard to your personal strengths and weaknesses.
Many employers will analyse the answers provided by the candidate to determine how the strengths and weaknesses will benefit the company or the candidate in the given job position. When you answer the questions, mention acceptable strengths and weaknesses that will not prevent you from completing the job.
Self-Motivation and Determination
Employees may see their self-motivation and determination as strengths. Employers might also see them as acceptable assets, as some workers are often solely responsible for completing projects on time and finding new work if none is immediately present. Determination and self-motivation are also key features of employees who often grow in a company and achieve promotions, raises and internal recognition.
Self-Confident and Intelligent
Another set of acceptable strengths are employee intelligence and self-confidence. If you are placed in a situation where you have to make an executive decision, the employer wants to know that you will make the decision based on knowledge of the company. Showing self-confidence in the decisions you make and basing the decisions on intelligence and knowledge of the industry is a strength most employers want to see.
You may be passionate about your work and defend it in situations where you find your opinion is not being respected. Having a debating attitude is often seen as a weakness for some employers, as debating employees often have trouble listening to another side of an argument or accepting a decision once it has been made.
However, a debating attitude is a weakness that can be used for something positive in a job position. It can be beneficial in project planning situations, where all sides of an argument need to be explored.
Lacking Job Skills
Any given job has a required list of skills that the employer prefers you to have. However, you may not have all of the skills required to do the job effectively. Although you understand that not having these required skills is a weakness, you can turn it into an acceptable weakness by explaining that you are eager to learn the necessary skills to do the job in the most effective manner. The employer may see this eagerness as a positive, since you are willing to learn new skills for your job position.
