Cosmetic Dentist Salary
Because many dentists are expected to retire between 2008 and 2018, the bureau expects that jobs for dentists to increase during that same period.
The need for cosmetic dentists is especially expected to grow with the increase in demand for cosmetic procedures. Salaries for cosmetic dentists vary based on several factors.
Cosmetic dentistry is a branch of dentistry that deals mainly with cosmetic procedures.
Cosmetic procedures are generally unnecessary for oral health but can restore your teeth.
According to the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry (AACD), cosmetic procedures include teeth-whitening, veneers, fillings that match your natural tooth colour and dental implants. As a cosmetic dentist, you can have the opportunity to bring confidence back to your patients’ smiles.
Experience is a large determinant of a person’s salary. This holds true for cosmetic dentists.
Those with one to four years of experience have a reported salary range of £56,615 to £99,190, according to PayScale.com.
Those with five to nine years of experience have a salary range of £61,100 to £89,570. As of April 2010, cosmetic dentists with 10 to 19 years of experience have the highest salary range of £77,090 to £147,875, while those with 20 plus years of experience have a range of £63,895 to £120,250.
The type of employer for which a cosmetic dentist works also helps determine their potential salary. Those working for private practices or firms have the highest and widest reported salaries. According to PayScale, they have a reported salary range of £49,790 to £131,105.
As of April 2010, cosmetic dentists working for general companies have a salary range of £76,635 to £119,015.
Self-employed cosmetic dentists have a salary range of £63,180 to £98,410. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, approximately three quarters of dentists are self-employed.
Cosmetic dentists often also receive a yearly bonus. Those with one to four years of experience generally receive a median bonus of £6,370.
Those with five to nine years of experience may receive a yearly bonus around £1,950.
Those with 10 to 19 years of experience have the highest reported median bonus of £17,875, according to PayScale.
After 20 plus years of experience, the median bonus decreases to £3,900 as of April 2010.
Bonuses are also tied to the dentists' yearly sales. Those with higher sales generally have higher bonuses.
Along with a nice salary, many cosmetic dentists also receive some combination of benefits as well. According to PayScale, two of the most common reported benefits are a 401(k) plan and paid holidays and vacations. Many cosmetic dentists also receive malpractice or liability insurance and life/disability insurance. They also may receive paid sick leave, reimbursement for education, training and/or tuition, and private medical insurance. Those benefits are less frequently a part of salary packages, however.
