A National Insurance number is a nine-digit identification number issued to persons over the age of 16 in the United Kingdom. The number is used to pay NI taxes and claim benefits like pensions and unemployment benefits. If your children live in the United Kingdom and you are receiving Child Benefit, your children will receive an NI number on their 16th birthday. If your children didn't receive a card, help is only a phone call away.
Gather your children's information. They will need identifying information like their date and place of birth, current address and parents' information.
Get your children to call the National Insurance Registrations Helpline at 0845 915 7006. Help is available between 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Friday.
Follow the advice given in the phone call. Your children may be asked to attend an "Evidence of Identity" interview at a local Jobcentre Plus, or you may be sent a paper application to fill out.
Wait for the NI number to arrive in the mail. This process may take up to 12 weeks.
If your children need to prove their identity, take as many original identity documents to the interview as you can. Identity documents include: passport, national identity card, residence permit, birth or adoption certificate and driving license.
