How to stop a payment on a western union money order
A money order sent through Western Union is a guaranteed form of payment, and if you need to stop the payment prior to it being cashed, a Western Union representative can cancel the transaction. A money order cancellation requires immediate action to increase the likelihood of stopping the receiver from completing the transaction, as you cannot receive a refund if the money order was cashed. According to Western Union, a stop payment can only be made on money orders that were not cashed. The money order can also be cancelled in person by filling out a money order affidavit, which costs £9 to process.
Contact the Western Union Fraud Department at 1-800-448-1492.
Press "1" to access the English menu and speak to a live service representative.
Explain your situation and request to cancel the money order transaction. Give the representative the serial number found on the money order receipt, and give the exact amount of the money order. The service representative can cancel the money order immediately and will give you a confirmation number of the cancelled transaction over the phone.
Visit the Western Union site and print out the money order affidavit form.
Fill out the form including your full name, money order serial number, money order purchase date and whether the money order was lost, stolen or destroyed.
Sign the affidavit form, and date it. Take it to your local Western Union office and have it notarised by a service representative.
Seal the form in an envelope and send it to Western Union Financial Services, Inc.
Lottery or contest awards that require you to send money prior to receiving your award are scams, and should be ignored if you receive a notice in the mail of your prize. Do not send money via wire transfers unless you know and trust the recipient. Contact the recipient or business to verify their identity prior to sending money. Wait until a check in your bank account clears before sending funds from the account.
Do not include your bank account information when sending a money order to a person or business you do not trust. Do not send a money order in response to a credit card or loan offer, as it is most likely a scam.
