Kilometers to Miles Converter
What is kilometer?
The SI symbol for kilometer is equivalent to one thousand metres in the metric system. The United States and the United Kingdom use the statute mile as the measurement unit for distances between geographical places on land in most of the world. The abbreviations k or K are not recommended by the BIPM. The kilometre is a term used in the US, UK, and Canadian militaries.
What is mile?
The international mile or statute mile is a British imperial unit and the United States customary unit of distance. The statute mile was defined by an international agreement in 1959 as 1,609.344 metres between the British Commonwealth and the United States. The nautical mile, the Italian mile, and the Chinese mile are examples of units derived from or roughly equivalent to the Roman mile. The statute mile was made equivalent to 8 furlongs or 5,280 feet in 1593 because of the greater importance of furlongs in Elizabethan-era England. Some successor states of the British Empire continue to use the mile. The US Geological Survey now uses the metre for official purposes, but legacy data from 1927 will mean that a separate US survey mile will be phased out in 2022. The international mile is still used in some countries, such as the United Kingdom and the United States, which have less than one million inhabitants.
