The base unit of length in the International System of Units is the metre. The SI unit symbol is m. The Earth's circumference is approximately 40000 km, which is one tenth of a millionth of the distance from the equator to the North Pole. The actual bar used for the redefined metre was changed in 1889. The metre was redefined in 1960 in terms of the wavelength of the emission line. The definition was changed in 2002 to clarify that the metre is a measure of proper length.

That gives 10 m x 1.0936 = 10.936 yd

### What is an example of one meter?

A standard metric unit is 3 feet 3 inches. The metric system of measurement includes a meter. Guitars, baseball bats, and yard sticks are objects that are about one meter long.

### Who decided the length of a meter?

The first measurement of the standard metre with an interferometer was done in 1893 by Albert A.Michelson, the inventor of the device. Interferometry was used frequently at the BIPM by 1925.
