A construction planner is responsible for the design, coordination and scheduling of a construction project. The planner also ensures that construction projects are budgeted accordingly and include materials and forecasting, with cost analysis projections, for engineers and construction personnel to perform a construction project. Construction planners are also known in the industry as a project manager.

General duties

A construction planner creates and maintains construction and engineering schedules. This aspect of the job is very important because of time frames that must be met and certain benchmarks that must be accomplished when constructing certain components of a project. The construction planner must also monitor cost in every phase of the construction project and communicate with management regarding delays, financing and materials management.


The planner must be able to work with other functions outside of the scope of project management. He must work closely with a procurement specialist to ensure that items or services needed match the needs of the project. The construction planner may work with construction engineers or managers throughout a construction project. Oral and written communications are important assets for planners. He may be called upon to meet with investors pertaining to a new construction project and must be computer savvy in using industry-related software. The planner must also have problem-solving skills.

Work environment

There are several organisations, firms or companies that hire construction planners. These entities include general construction contractors, architectural/engineering firms and commercial real estate development agencies. Construction planners typically work a normal working week but depending on the type of project, they can work on the weekends, especially if a project is behind schedule. The planner must ensure the project is completed on time by staying in close touch with other personnel, such as the construction manager.

Educational requirements

Most employers seek an individual with a bachelor's degree in project development or construction management. A construction planner should also possess a strong background in maths and science. Courses that are considered a benefit to becoming a construction planner include algebra and geometry, business math, project analysis, statistics and business report writing.

Employment outlook

According to the National Careers Service, a typical starting salary for a construction manager is around £27,000, with senior managers earning over £70,000.
