Take a number when you arrive at the Social Security office and wait. According to the Social Security Administration website, make sure that you have your identification with you, including your Social Security number and date of birth, as well as a driver's license or other official ID. It is helpful to bring copies of your disability claim and related paperwork as well.
Call Social Security at 1-800-772-1213 as an alternative to visiting the office. However, as of 2010, The Social Security and Disability Resource Center reports that the automated status information is sometimes incorrect.
Contact the Disability Determination Service (DDS) for your state. You can get the number for your nearest DDS office by contacting the Social Security office where your claim was filed.
