Objectives of housekeeping

Housekeeping is the general tidying up of a home; anything from scrubbing the kitchen floor to organising a bookshelf is housekeeping. Most adults engage in housekeeping activities weekly or even daily -- even those who have hired help to do most of the work for them. People put so much effort into housekeeping because they have a few objectives in mind.

Good Air Quality

Air quality is a housekeeping objective for many people who have allergies, weakened immune systems or enjoy airy, fresh-smelling homes. Housekeeping activities such as dusting, furniture cleaning, vacuuming, rug cleaning and airing improve the air quality and scent of a home; this may have added health benefits such as reducing allergies and preventing illness from mould and mildew.

Reducing Clutter

Some people do not mind clutter; others do their housekeeping with clutter reduction in mind. This could mean getting rid of junk mail, things you don't use, optimising storage areas or general cleanup. This is an important objective of housekeeping for people who like to keep a tidy home.


Cleanliness is the number one objective of housekeeping. Whether you are cleaning your shower or organising your filing cabinet, you have cleanliness in mind. If you have children, you want the surfaces and floors in your home clean; even people who do not have children want their homes to be sanitary.

Making the Home Presentable

Another objective of housekeeping is to have a presentable house; in general, people want their homes to be inviting to themselves and others. Excessive clutter, dust, garbage and odour make a home less comfortable; guests typically do not want to visit a filthy house and most people do not want to live in one. Regular housekeeping prevents homes from becoming uninviting.

Making the Home Run Smoothly

Some housekeeping chores, such as doing paperwork, performing minor repairs and laundry, help keep a home running smoothly. When a family ignores these chores, things pile up and the people living in the home are less effective. For example, if you are trying to get ready for work but you has no clean laundry, you're probably going to be late; keep up with your housekeeping to avoid such scenarios.
