How to Interview for a Lab Technician

A laboratory technician is a professional worker who tests and analyses samples in the laboratory using extensive equipment. This can include testing saliva or blood samples for crime scene investigators, testing samples from patients as part of the diagnosis or researching cells and molecules to find cures for known diseases. When individuals are interviewing for a laboratory technician position, they must show they understand the laboratory environment and have the expertise to safely work in the laboratory.

Prepare your resume before you leave for the interview. The resume should show your skills and experience for the position. The interviewer will ask you about your previous work experience and specific set of skills that make you the ideal candidate for this position. Your skills should not be broad skills, like great communication skills and working with computers, but should be specific to laboratory technicians.

Review the terminology and procedures often used in the laboratory that you may have learnt during an internship or academic training. You should be able to explain your abilities in handling dangerous materials, biological substances and know laboratory safety procedures in case of a dangerous chemical leak.

Practice your definition of a laboratory technician. You may be asked to define what a laboratory technician is and what role the position has in a given laboratory or company. You should be able to define the role of a laboratory technician to show your expertise in the area and your interest in the job position.

Explain your knowledge of laboratory conventions during the interview. Laboratory technicians must follow procedures and regulations when they are in the laboratory to remain safe in the workplace and protect the safety of other laboratory technicians. Answer the interview questions in a manner that allows you to show that you follow regulations and safety policies put in place in the laboratory. Safety is important and the employer wants to see you understand that fact.

Show your passion and interest in working for the laboratory. The employer will be able to see your passion for the industry through your actions and achievements. In this regard, you should be able to identify any strengths or weaknesses you may have with the procedures in the laboratory or your work ethics. Your employer is more likely to offer you a job, if you can admit to having weaknesses but proving that they do not interfere with your work.
