How to write a self assessment performance appraisal

Performance reviews at work mean that it is time for your supervisor to analyse your contributions to the company, your effectiveness in your specific role and your overall worth as an employee. Often employers will ask their staff to conduct a self-assessment, also known as a self-review or an appraisal.

These reviews, often given as a report or short presentation, give the employee an opportunity to highlight their strengths and significant past work about which the employer may not be aware. Writing a good self-assessment lies in using positive language, presenting truthful facts about past work and providing specific future goals.

Keep a file throughout the year in which you store letters of praise, commendations or data supporting your contributions to the company. Regularly update this file with a list of major projects you have worked on throughout the year. Refer back to this file before beginning your report to jog your memory about work highlights you wish to tell your boss.

Focus on the positive contributions you have made to the company while simultaneously remaining realistic. Include those projects and past work that allows you to prove your worth as an employee, and point out what work you would like to improve upon in the future. Focus on the largest contributions instead of small hurdles. Minor daily achievements that are not much better than your minimal required effort will not seem impressive.

Use positive language that focuses on what you have accomplished. Use action verbs to explain what steps you have proactively taken to improve the company's business.

Ask colleagues for feedback about your performance. Ask them if they remember any accomplishments you may have forgotten to include in your report. Solicit direct quotes from team members that you can reference, which express your helpfulness and professional manner.

Use the file you created over the year to support your claims throughout your report. Include appendices, charts, graphs or specific numerical figures whenever possible to quantify how you have improved company performance.

Focus only on your achievements and growth instead of blaming other employees for their bad behaviour. Performance reviews are a time to show off your abilities, and blaming others will make it look like you cannot take responsibility for your own actions.

End your self-assessment with a list of action items where you plan to improve your performance. Be specific, and outline exactly what you plan on doing. Refer back to past portions of the report where you were lacking to show that you are capable of learning from your past errors and are dedicated to future improvement.
